Winter Roofing Checklist for Northern California Homes

Winter in Northern California can bring everything from heavy rain and wind to snowfall in higher elevations. Whether you’re in Sacramento, Auburn, El Dorado Hills, or up in the Tahoe basin, your roof is your home’s first line of defense, and winter is when it works hardest.

Use this Winter Roofing Checklist to prevent leaks, avoid costly repairs, and extend the life of your roof.

Check for Existing Roof Damage

Before winter storms roll in, inspect your roof (or schedule an inspection from a professional roofer) for:

  • Missing or cracked shingles
  • Lifting or curling edges
  • Signs of sagging or rot
  • Visible moss, algae, or debris
  • Gaps or cracks in flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents

Pro Tip: If you’ve experienced high winds or hail recently, check for storm damage or have a pro inspect it for hidden issues.

Clean Out Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters are one of the biggest causes of roof leaks and water damage during winter. Make sure:

  • Leaves, pine needles, and debris are cleared out
  • Downspouts are directing water away from your foundation
  • Gutter hangers are secure and not sagging

If your gutters are outdated or damaged, consider replacing them before the next big storm hits.

Trim Overhanging Branches

Trees that hang over your roof can cause:

  • Debris buildup
  • Shingle damage
  • Roof punctures during windstorms
  • Easy access for pests

Keep branches trimmed back at least 6 feet to reduce risk and protect your roof from winter breakage.

Inspect Attic Ventilation and Insulation

Proper attic ventilation prevents ice dams, reduces condensation, and improves energy efficiency. During your check:

  • Look for signs of moisture or mold
  • Check that the insulation is dry and evenly spread
  • Make sure air vents aren’t blocked by debris or nesting pests

This also helps extend the life of your roof, especially in higher elevation homes near Tahoe, Truckee, or Pollock Pines.

Look for Signs of Interior Leaks

Sometimes the first sign of a roof issue is inside your home. Check your ceilings and walls for:

  • Water stains or discoloration
  • Peeling paint or bubbling drywall
  • Damp smells or mold growth

If you notice any of these issues, schedule a roof repair or consider a roof replacement if your system is over 20 years old or has significant damage.

Remove Moss and Debris

A roof covered in moss or pine needles won’t drain properly and can lead to leaks or rot. If you're wondering how to remove moss from your roof, we recommend:

  • Gently brushing off loose debris
  • Using a moss treatment approved for your roof type
  • Avoiding pressure washers, which can damage shingles

Or better yet, hire a professional for safe and effective cleaning.
